This Week in Retail – Episode 16

TWIR

The retail industry is constantly growing in competition, and this week was no exception. Big news came from Google and eBay this week. The Wall Street Journal reported that Google was possibly testing a “buy now” button for its mobile search results. This button would allow a shopper to purchase an item directly from a retailer without leaving the Google search engine. The move could intensify competition between large marketplaces such as Amazon and eBay.

Speaking of eBay, the marketplace has begun testing a loytalty shipping program similar to Amazon’s Prime program. Specific details on the testing have not yet surfaced, but the eCommerce giant will begin testing it in Germany, and its price is speculated to be $15-$25. The move is the second program to compete against Amazon Prime in recent weeks, with Wal-Mart announcing one last week.
